What Are the Ten Commandments?

The Ten Commandments are found in two primary places in the Bible: Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:6–21. They were spoken by God directly to the Israelites and later written by His own hand on stone tablets. The commandments can be divided into two categories:

  • The first four deal with our relationship with God.

This goes beyond physical idols. It’s a warning against reshaping God into a form that suits us. We must worship Him as He has revealed Himself, not as we wish Him to be. This challenges the modern tendency to create a “customized” god that fits our lifestyle.

3. Do Not Take God’s Name in Vain (Exodus 20:7)

God’s name is holy. This commandment reminds us to honor Him not only with our lips but also with our lives. Misusing His name includes casual or irreverent speech, false oaths, or even claiming to follow Him while living contrary to His Word.

4. Remember the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8-11)

The Sabbath reminds us that we are more than what we produce. It’s a command to rest, reflect, and reconnect with God. In a fast-paced, burnout-prone culture, honoring the Sabbath is a radical and restorative act of trust.

5. Honor Your Parents (Exodus 20:12)

The Ten Commandments in the New Covenant

Some may ask: “Aren’t we under grace now? Do the Ten Commandments still apply?” Jesus answered this beautifully in Matthew 5:17: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”

Jesus didn’t abolish the commandments—He fulfilled them and deepened their meaning. In fact, He summarized them into two great commandments:

  • Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind (summarizing the first four commandments).

  • Love your neighbor as yourself (summarizing the last six commandments).
